Exterior Painting

Siding, trim, doors and railings, prepped to stand up to New York weather.

New York exteriors take a beating: summer sun, wind off the water, freeze and thaw all winter. Paint fails first where the prep was skipped, so exterior work starts with scraping loose coatings, cleaning, repairing and priming bare spots before any finish goes on.

We look at the whole outside of the property with you, point out what is peeling and why, and write a scope that separates surface preparation from painting so you can see where the effort goes.

What is included

  • Wood, fiber cement and previously painted siding
  • Trim, fascia, soffits and window casings
  • Entry doors, garage doors and shutters
  • Porches, railings, fences and exterior woodwork
  • Scraping, sanding, washing and spot priming as specified
  • Caulking at paintable joints and around trim

Before we start

Exterior work depends on surface condition, access, weather and the coating chosen. Let us know about side-yard access, landscaping close to the house, and any areas that have peeled more than once. Rot, active leaks or moisture problems need to be repaired before paint will hold.

A good fit for

  • Peeling or chalking paint on siding and trim
  • Faded front doors, railings and porches
  • Getting a house ready to list
  • Changing the exterior color scheme

Questions about exterior painting

If your question is not here, call (718) 984-0719.

When is the best time for exterior painting in New York?

Late spring through early fall is typical. What matters is the temperature, humidity and dryness of the surface on the days the paint goes on, and the product manufacturer's application limits. We schedule around the forecast.

Can you paint over peeling paint?

Not directly. Loose paint has to be scraped and sanded back to a sound edge, and bare wood primed. The amount of prep is decided during the estimate and listed in your scope.

Do you paint aluminum or vinyl siding?

Some siding can be painted with the right preparation and coating, and some should not be. We look at the material and its condition before recommending it.
