Clear the small things
Take down pictures, mirrors and curtains, and pack away breakables, electronics and anything personal. Larger furniture can usually stay and be moved to the middle of the room. Confirm who moves what.
Plan around daily life
Decide which rooms you need access to each day, where pets will stay, and how people will get in and out. Tell the crew about alarms, keys and any room that must not be entered.
Parking and access
In New York, parking and building access can slow a job more than anything else. Let the contractor know about driveway space, street parking, doormen, elevators and building hours.
Confirm the details once more
Walk through the colors and sheens by room, and make sure the written scope matches what you expect, including closets, ceilings and trim.
After the last coat
Ask about cure times before hanging pictures or scrubbing walls, and keep a labeled sample of each color for touch-ups.
