Start with the same surface list
One estimate may cover walls while another includes ceilings, trim, doors and closets. That difference can be easy to miss when you only read the total. Put the estimates side by side and mark every surface each contractor has included. Ask about anything that appears in one scope but not the other.
Look closely at preparation
Painting over a sound wall is a different job from repairing cracks, removing loose coatings and fixing rough patches. Preparation uses time before the room looks any different. Ask which repairs are included, where primer is planned and how the contractor will handle a problem discovered during the work.
Compare the finish specification
A product name alone does not describe the finished job. Check the product line, sheen, surfaces it will cover and planned application. A large color change or a difficult existing finish can affect the work. The contractor should explain those decisions in the scope instead of leaving you to assume them.
Count access and protection
A tall stair hall, occupied office or furnished room takes planning. Floor protection, furniture movement, building hours and material access should be accounted for. A price that leaves those details to you may shift work and cost after the job begins.
Ask for a corrected comparison
